First of all, stenciling is a weird word. So anyway, I have been having fun making canvases colorful. I love color! Some of the canvases look amazing on their own, but I wanted to add a little something extra to others. That’s when I started adding some lettering to the canvases.

The good news here is that you don’t have to have great penmanship or know how to do fancy lettering… or have the time. I found these fancy stencils at Walmart. Just under 10 dollars and there are 26 different designs! Woohoo!!!

STENCILING ON CANVAS DIY TUTORIAL

Paint yourself a canvas or grab one that’s already painted and carefully punch out your stencil.

I didn’t tape the stencil down because I didn’t want to risk ruining the background. Just carefully hold it in place. As for the paint, I just squirted some craft paint on a piece of scrap paper. Super sophisticated over here. Now, the trick is to get a little paint on your brush and dab it off on something else before putting it on the canvas. If you have too much paint on your brush then it will be too wet and will bleed under the stencil. Not pretty. Believe me. And you want to dab straight up and down on the stencil. Don’t let it wiggle its way underneath it. Again, not pretty.

Once you’ve gone over your whole stencil, lift the stencil straight up. You can then wipe it off if it’s plastic. These are cardboard so I just set it aside to dry. Now you can leave it as is, but I go a step further. I take a small brush with a bit of paint and go over the letters, connecting the breaks in the letters. The stencil has to have those breaks or it falls apart, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave them there. On this one I went ahead and connected the letters.

And that’s it! May add a few more embellishments to this one, but I’m not sure yet. I really love the background and don’t want to screw it up, so we’ll see. Hope you enjoyed this little tidbit about stenciling and things I’ve learned the hard way. Good luck to you!
