A few weeks ago, in one of his sermons, my pastor said, “Operate at the level where you want to be, not the level where you are.” This really struck me, as it can be applied to many areas of our lives. It can be applied to our faith, our relationships, our work, our goals, etc.

So how do we do this? I think the answer will be slightly different for everyone and different for each area you’re wanting to better yourself at. The specifics will be different. But how do we operate at the level where we want to be?

Ask yourself these questions honestly and write down your answers. Creating a visual is helpful in creating a pathway.

Where are you right now?

Before you can live your life where you want to be, you need to know where you’re at. What does your life look like right now. Be realistic. Don’t exaggerate or downplay where you are. What are your current circumstances, resources, strengths, weaknesses, connections, failed attempts, and successes?

Where do you want to be?

If you don’t know where you want to be then how do you know where you’re going or how to get there. You don’t usually just get in your car and go. Typically, you have a plan of where you’re headed, and you may even whip out GPS to get you there. So figure out where you want to be. Do you want a raise? Do you want a better relationship? Do you want something specific for your business? Do you want to be better educated? Do you want to be serving in a certain capacity?

How do you get there?

Take a look at what you wrote down for where you are and where you want to be. What needs to change? What needs improvement? Is there a bad habit you need to kick or one you need to create? If you’re wanting to have a successful business, change your mindset. Believe and convince yourself that you are already successful and behave as such. If you’re wanting to have a more intimate relationship with your spouse, behave as though you already have the relationship you desire. If you want a stronger faith, live as though you have it.

Kurt Vonnegut said, “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”

Determine who you want to be and live as though you already are who you want to be. You may have heard the saying, “Fake it til you make it.” When we choose to operate at where we want to be rather than where we are, we will gain the confidence we need to truly become who we’re wanting to be and achieve what we’re wanting to achieve.

What is one thing that you’re wanting to do or be? Start living it today.
